BIO
With a voice described as ‘truly astonishing’ by Rolling Stone, Anna Smyrk is a powerful singer and songmaker from Australia. Her songs are anthemic indie bombshells, pairing vulnerable lyrics with explosive arrangements and undeniable hooks.
2024 has already been a huge year for Anna, with highlights including official showcases at SXSW (Austin, Texas) and Folk Alliance International (Kansas City) and touring the US for the first time.
Anna's recent EP was recorded in Nashville with award-winning producers Jake Finch and Collin Pastore (Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, boygenius).
The new record is a glittering collection of songs about fight or flight, self-sabotage and the push and pull in relationships. The EP charted on college radio in the US, while singles were added to MTV in Germany and to Apple Music’s New Indie playlist across multiple territories, including the USA.
Anna has toured non-stop over the last few years, supporting huge Australian artists like Birds of Tokyo and Tim Rogers, and performing at festivals such as Port Fairy Folk Festival (Aus), Woodford Folk Festival (Aus) and Mile of Music (USA).
In 2022, she performed official showcases at Folk Alliance International (USA) at NXNE (Canada) and Live at Heart (Sweden) and played a 15-date tour in Canada.
She went on to sign with booking agents in two territories (Onya Soapbox in Australia and Black Oak Artists in North America) and embarked on a 17-date tour of Germany and Sweden in 2023.
Anna's 2021 EP, a collection of long-distance love songs that sits somewhere in the sonic realm between Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen and Middle Kids, cemented her reputation as ‘a significant songwriter with an exceptional voice’ (Backseat Mafia UK).
Singles from the EP were added to rotation on national radio in Australia (Double J) and MTV and described as ‘soul-stirring’ by Triple J.
Anna has honed her songwriting craft with some of the finest, including Rachel Baiman, Ainslie Wills and Alice Ivy. She was recently completed the Women in Music mentoring program run by the Australian Independent Records Association, where she received mentoring from industry powerhouse Mardi Caught.
Anna is currently working on her debut album with producer Anna Laverty (Courtney Barnett, Nick Cave), set for release in 2025.
